November 2021 Luncheon

What I hope will be the first of many get-togethers.

Tech's Auditorium

As you know, Tech’s auditorium is quite impressive (in point of fact, imposing). Especially for a nervous 8th grader taking the entrance exam. I had never even been to downtown Brooklyn by myself and here I was taking a bus and a train and walking through a pretty rough neighborhood to get there.

As I entered the auditorium, I was given a lapboard and told to sit two seats away from the next student. Only later did I learn that the proctors were members of the Arista Honor Society. I know because I became a member and, as an upperclassman, got to perform the same proctoring duties (and bully the young, scared “kids” taking the exam).

I sat in the orchestra seats, under the balcony overhang. I clearly remember looking toward the stage and thinking it must be a mile away – I was never very good at estimating distances.

I sweated through the exam, never turning my head so that the proctors wouldn’t accuse me of cheating. Obviously, I did well enough to be admitted to Tech.

Somehow, during my freshman year, I must have become noticed and was asked to join the Honor Guard. We were the ones who paraded out the flags of the United States and BTHS at the beginning of each auditorium session. I guess I was a nerd among nerds.

In my senior year, when “the girls” were first admitted to Tech, I became a member of the Drama Club. We put on two shows that year: Guys and Dolls and our own version of Alice in Wonderland.

The members of the Drama Club took to hanging out in the auditorium. It became our (very large) clubhouse. We sang songs, played around and interacted in teenage ways – hey, there were girls in Tech for the first time.

Standing on the Tech stage is quite a feeling. As big as the auditorium looks from the audience, it looks ten times bigger from the stage. I’ve seen it empty, in the dark, and with the lights on filled with 3,000 students. Boy, do I have memories.

Scheduling

Unfortunately, I think it’s still too risky for us to meet on September 11 or October 3.  So, I am shooting for lunch on Sunday, November 7. I am still looking for a place to meet. I am thinking of a restaurant so we can get some refreshment and food.

I will send another email asking if you will attend. (I might use a tool like Survey Monkey.)
